Foundry Applications

An operating mix (the distribution of abrasive sizes actually in the blast machine) can only be developed and maintained through controlled operational practices.

Controlled operational practices are negated if the abrasive, as purchased, is not consistent batch after batch.

PanAbrasive abrasives meet or exceed every aspect of SAE and SFSA specifications. Our ISO 9001:2000 Registration assures consistency in our manufacturing process.

Controlled operational practices are difficult to maintain in a machine which, as part of its process, self destructs.

Training is provided to operators and maintenance personnel at no charge.  Additionally, a Statistical Process Control (SPC) computer program for the blast operation is also available.

The statistical process control involves :

  • Setting and maintaining the blast pattern for the castings to be cleaned
  • Monitoring the volume of abrasive thrown
  • Adjusting the separator to remove sand, scale and spent abrasive, and to develop the "medium" and "fine" sizes of the operating mix
  • Regulating the dust collector to maintain separator reliability, and to remove other sand and dust from the blast operation
  • Controlling carryout losses
  • Proper record keeping
- Based on attrition, abrasive is frequently added so that the coarse end of the operating mix   is maintained. This addition rate is equal to the removal rate.
- Cycle times are recorded to ensure minimum blast machine times while providing optimum   cleanliness.
- The amount of castings (in tons) cleaned is compared to pounds of abrasive used.
- Part's life and maintenance are analyzed compared to casting cleaned.

Typical analysis of a foundry blast operation's cost (including depreciation, manpower, energy, replacement parts and abrasive) usually show the cost of abrasive to roughly equal the cost of energy required to run the blast and dust collection equipment. Abrasive is usually no more than 5% of the total cost.

PanAbrasive technical support and quality abrasives will have a positive affect on every aspect of the blast operation costs. The price difference between a quality abrasive, supplied with technical support, and a cheap (lower price) abrasive is insignificant in light of the overall blast cleaning cost savings.
